Cristiano Ronaldo set to return to Manchester United in January

Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Manchester United this January – but only because Old Trafford is set to host a friendly between Portugal and Argentina.

United supporters have been campaigning for the Real Madrid superstar to be brought back to Old Trafford – with one fans’ group flying a banner over the Spanish side’s most recent league game. It looks like they will get their wish during the next transfer window, but it will only be a fleeting visit.

The Daily Telegraph reports that United are close to finalising a deal that will see them staging Ronaldo’s Portugal in a friendly against Argentina.

It is claimed that negotiations between United and senior figures from the Portugal Football Federation and Argentine Football Association have gone well, with an outline agreement now in place.

The match would be billed as an international clash of the two best players in the world: Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi.

Confirmation that the game is going ahead is expected in the next few days. It is pencilled in for the same day as a friendly between England and Scotland.

Ronaldo’s only previous return to Old Trafford was for a Champions League second round clash in March 2013. He found the net as United were knocked out of the competition by Real, who he joined from United in an £80m transfer in 2009.
